怀氏虎鸫（Zoothera aurea）原是虎斑地鸫（Zoothera dauma）的普通亚种（Z. d. aurea），后提升为独立的种。原虎斑地鸫日本亚种（Z. d. toratugumi）现在则成为怀氏虎鸫的亚种（Z. a. toratugumi）。
怀氏虎鸫和虎斑地鸫的外表差别细微。难以把握的差别是前者比后者体长（30cm vs 27cm），稍明显一点的可靠差别是，前者下嘴基为肉色（一说黄绿色），后者则是全嘴褐色。
